Taste Of Garrett County 2012 A Garrett Trails Benefit.

Time again for one of the most misunderstood events at Deep Creek Lake. The Taste Of Garrett County 2012. The event will be held June 18, 2012 at the WISP Resort. The ‘Taste’ is a fantastic collaboration of food vendors from around the area. Showcasing their wares and no one leaves hungry. More importantly the Taste Of Garrett is the primary fundraiser for Garrett Trails.

If you have not heard of Garrett Trails here is their mission statement. Garrett Trails is a nonprofit, volunteer organization dedicated to the development of a well-used network of outstanding quality trails that provide access to Garrett County’s historic, municipal, and environmental treasures which link to trails outside the county. Garrett Trails believes outstanding quality trails are important to the economic development of the county, will attract visitors, and will promote fitness and outdoor enjoyment for county residents.

Unfortunately this sometimes gets forgotten when the feast begins. What an incredible time it is. You have my word on it, there will be something to tantalize the taste buds of everyone. If you have been before, rest assured the old time favorites will be on display. Chances are that there will be plenty of opportunities to make new favorites as well.

Plan on arriving early and working up an appetite by running in the Race Up The Face or watch from the bottom.

Below is a glimpse of Taste Of Garrett 2011

Snowpril Deep Creek Lake Style 2012

“SNOWPRIL” That is what Weather.com is calling it. The next end all storm that is paralyzing people with fear. I thin it is kind of cool to get a one day snow storm. I was greeted by this sight when I went out this morning. I can say I have never seen it lay like this in all my years at Deep Creek Lake.

SCUBA Diving Deep Creek Lake. Big Mussels

When planning a vacation or talking about Deep Creek Lake diving is not something that usually is mentioned or comes to mind. I think it would be great if we could sink some things and add diving to the huge list of great things to do in Garrett County.

I was running around for work and ran into a friend who mentioned they were getting ready to SCUBA Dive in Deep Creek Lake. Since getting my certification at Christmas to be a search and rescue diver, I have been anxious to “get my feet wet”. The  above water temperature was around 80 degrees today. It was 56 below the surface. The clarity of the lake was amazing, crystal clear. I would eventually like to spot and record one of the rumored GIANT CARP I hear about.

Today I spotted a bass, a crayfish, 2 stumps and a bunch of mussel shells. I was unaware they were even in the lake. Pretty large in fact. I hope to have an underwater camera soon so please check back often.

Deep Creek Lake Winter Weather. A Funny Note

Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County are notorious for having four distinct seasons. Let’s face it, it is one of the reasons we are such a great vacation destination and awesome place to live. After having survived the worst winter ever with over 220 inches of snow this last winter was mild to say the least. No matter how many ‘snowmagedons’ ‘storm of the century’ or ‘blizzard 20xx’ we get sometimes things get a bit harsh.

I had stopped into Keysers Ridge Truck Stop for a morning breakfast hamburger and saw this note. Thought it was worth sharing.

Deep Creek Lake Pizza? Try Brenda’s Pizzeria. Eat In Or Carry Out

A more central Deep Creek Lake location can not be found than Brenda’s Pizzeria located at Traders Landing on Garrett Highway Deep Creek Lake MD. There is no mistaking that it is a traditional pizzeria. Another decent alternative for dining when looking for a place to eat. If you meet Brenda you may understand why there is a feel of NY in this place.

The menu is a nice mix of salads, sandwiches, pastas and of course pizza. I preface every pizza review understanding that it is a very personal subjective food item. There is no denying the pizza here is BIG. They even have a 26″ pie. Pizza by the slice are also nice and hefty add in the flavorful fresh ingredients and it is a blast to eat. Salads are fresh and crisp the only complaint they were served on very small plates and difficult to eat. One guest thought the Feta some of the best ever. The pastas and subs are pretty straight forward and nothing jumped up and wowed anyone. A cheese steak on week was just right the next week a little greasy. The dessert menu seemed to contain outside sourced items and no one ventured that avenue.

The place was very clean dining room and restrooms alike. Service was adequate to order food and have it brought to the table. On one visit after food delivery there was no follow up and everyone was licking ice looking for something more to drink. Another visit met with less personality and more methodical service. Given the general apathetic approach to dining in many Deep Creek Lake  restaurants a meal without incident is often a blessing.

Prices seem inline for the ingredients and product an amped up service effort would make things great. All in all in looking for a mid range restaurant at Deep Creek Lake Brenda’s Pizzeria is a pretty good place to eat.

Need To Move Fast? Try Deep Creek Lake MD Subway?

I am not one who usually favors chain restaurants and all that they have to offer. Thanks to a better swing in the Deep Creek Lake real estate market I was in a hurry and hungry one day. I happened to be passing by the Deep Creek Lake Subway. Located on MD Rt. 219 along the main body of the lake.

Although the ads would lead you to believe that Subway is THE place where all the olympic athletes eat it still is a franchise sub shop at heart. I will not deny that the breads are baked fresh, taste good and smell even better. The condiments and toppings were also equally above par. The meats and cheeses well there could be room for improvement but for the price are more than adequate.

The place was incredibly clean all three of my visits which were in the mud season here at Deep Creek. What really blew my mind was the service. I feel old calling people kids so lets just say they were younger employees. They were kind, courteous and amazingly fast. So good was the service and decent the sub I went back 3 straight days, These employees could take their skills and do better for themselves at other Deep Creek Lake places to eat. Managers of local places to dine could do themselves a favor and find employees like these.

All in all I was very pleased with all experiences at the Deep Creek Lake Subway. I am giving 4.5 out of 5 remembering this is not fine dining rather compared to others in the class.

Deep Creek Lake MD News and Headlines

I have been pretty delinquent in my Blogging as of late. When I do post I try to focus on the good and the fun of all things Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County. I refuse to copy and paste others articles and usually stay away from the news of the moment. However in sorting through scraps and emails I have assembled a brief synopsis of just what has been happening around Deep Creek Lake lately.

In no particular order. Adventure Sports Center International ASCI defaults on loans, county to takeover. LISTEN TO MEETING HERE. (It is a large file) Schools to close. All the hoopla around the painted bears for nothing. Canopy walkway scrapped it seems over accessibility issues. (you can still climb trees) Garrett College buys building from Garrett County. Wendell Beitzel votes against gay marriage and for a tax limit on marcellus gas drilling. Thankfully the minority. There was a horrible accident at the wisp. Mountain State Brew Company catches on fire. A women ran down her boyfriend. Spring has sprung.

Now that my odds and ends pile has been cleaned up it will be back to business as usual at BlogDeepCreek.com More fun than news.

Mountain State Brew Pub. Eating Around Deep Creek Lake

With three locations in the region Mountain State Brewing Company offers great craft beers. At Deep Creek Lake it also offers slope views and brick oven specialties. Located in McHenry there is plenty of seating available in the dining areas or pull up a bench along the bar. It has a casual laid back feel from the moment you walk through the door. The concrete floor made me hungry for peanuts and shells to toss about.  That was not an option but the vibe. The restroom looked like it could be hosed out and therefore was clean. If you are tall don’t look on the tops of things.

As for the food.. On the first visit it was a burrito exploration. Served with chips and salsa they were all well stuffed with good ingredients. True belly fillers. The favorite of our selection the Loaded Hillbilly.

On a follow up trip I returned solo to try a pizza. No question a wood fired oven bakes a mean pie. An open kitchen is also fun as a diner watching them make your order. As the only person in the place I was a little disappointed that it was 22 minutes until my pizza was started. I had ordered a cup of the soup of the day to tide me over. It was beef vegetable. A little light on both beef and vegetables. I understand that at most places the soup is the profitable trash can for left over ingredients, It was OK but the $7 price tag I thought a bit excessive. When the pizza, er flat bread rather did arrive, the crust was great the ingredients fresh and flavorful. At $20 probably much for a pizza but this was a flat bread.

Service was adequate usually as the only person in a place some attempt is made to engage the customer there was none. Would I go back to eat at the Mountain State Brewing Company at Deep Creek Lake? I think i would for a burrito.
