Deep Creek Lake To Hold Annual Ramp Cook Off April 28, 2012

If you pay close attention in your outdoor travels around Deep Creek Lake you may just catch a whiff of ‘Ramps’.  Allium Tricocum the Ramp is a wild onion/leek with a very strong odor and even bigger garlic/onion flavor. Eat enough and you will definitely smell like them. And they sure are delicious. I love to try and keep a jar of hot and sour pickled ramps around but they never seem to last.

Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center will be holding the annual Ramp Cook Off. April 28, 2012. It is a great event and chance to see some clever and tasty alternative uses for the Ramp.

Deep Creek Lake State Park Egg Dying Easter Event

There is no doubt about it signs of spring are happening all around Deep Creek Lake. A flyer from the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center reminded me that it is indeed the season.

Cardboard box derby accident at WISP Resort 2012

It only takes 1 accident to make one wonder. Suddenly putting kids in a box and pushing them down a hill doesn’t seem like suck a great idea. The talk of Deep Creek Lake this week is unfortunately not about the great spring weather we are having but about the unfortunate accident at the WISP resort. You can see a tastefully done recap of this years event by clicking HERE.

I was glad that I was not at “The Office” I was working from home so I was able to respond to the scene. I am the one in the gap sweatshirt. If you did witness the accident I hope that you also had a chance to see the tremendous efforts of all the volunteers of the fire department and rescue squads. It makes me very proud to be part of the Deep Creek Lake fire and rescue family. Please remember them with the upcoming chicken BBQ season.

Ice Fishing, Snowmobiling, Skating on Deep Creek Lake? Beware The Ice

It is no secret that Deep Creek Lake is a treasure providing great things to do in the summer months. Usually Deep Creek Lake is less used but equally enjoyed by winter sports enthusiasts. Ice fishing, snowmobiling, and skating on the frozen surface are all great things to do to enjoy our resource. Warmer temperatures this season have prevented the surface from freezing as of yet. Everyone knows it is coming and when it does please review the following public safety warning from the Maryland Park Service.

The Maryland Park Service advises individuals enjoying activities at Deep Creek Lake to be alert of safety hazards as temperatures begin to freeze the lake, particularly at night.

“Snowmobilers, ice fishermen, hikers and cross-country skiers traveling on the lake should exercise caution,” said Mark Spurrier, Deep Creek Lake Recreation Area Assistant Manager. “Wearing a personal floatation device could prevent a tragedy.”

Road salt and abrasives plowed from highway bridges may affect the quality of the ice underneath. Hidden snowdrifts can act as ramps and cause sleds and snowmobiles to become airborne leading to a loss of control and accidents.

Deep Creek Lake is part of the designated off-road vehicle trail system. Only registered snowmobiles are permitted to use the trail. Permits are available by mail or at any of the local State park offices. Snowmobiles may operate at night if equipped with working head and taillights. Access to the lake may be made at Deep Creek Lake State Park or with permission from a private landowner adjacent to the lake.

For information on ice conditions at Deep Creek Lake, call a park ranger at 301-387-5563 during the week-day or the Discovery Center on weekends at 301-387-7067.

To report people, pets or wildlife that have fallen through the ice, call either 911 or the Department of Natural Resources at 410-260-8888.

Deep Creek Lake Garrett County Happy Holidays

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM BLOGDEEPCREEK.COM

I hope that everyone has a happy and safe holiday season. Not only because it should be a great season of family and fun, but also because of my alliance with fire and EMS departments at Deep Creek Lake and in Garrett County.

As a member of both the Bittinger Volunteer Fire Department and the Northern Garrett Rescue Squad a safe holiday allows us to spend time with our families. My holiday wish would be if the public knew the selfless effort all fire and EMS providers give throughout the year. 24 hours a day 365 days a year when the alarm sounds people come. Risking life and injury to help the Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County residents and visitor alike

The greatest gift you could give this holiday season is a BIG THANK YOU to a fire or ems provider. Chances are you or someone you know has relied on these services in the past, or you will in the future. If you can not show your support monetarily there are countless ways to help.

MOVE OVER when emergency vehicles are traveling on the road. Stop by a chicken BBQ, cash bash, or other fundraiser. Get creative, everyone loves cookies (hint).

My thanks to everyone for being such great people to volunteer with in trying times.

Happy Holidays To All

Troubled Waters At CARC? Garrett College Swimming Alternative To Deep Creek Lake

I was very excited about the opening of the CARC. Although not the most attractive name in my opinion. Finally a community pool, gym, fitness center and more housed at Garrett College, McHenry MD. The heart of Deep Creek Lake. The pool,  the winter alternative to a Deep Creek Lake swim, gym and building have people talking. My original BLOG POST details the favorable impression my first visit left on me. Now one month later…..

I have been heading to the gym every other day for the first month. I get to see the students of Garrett County schools learning to swim in the pool. I am reminded of a saying about “Can’t have a pool with out P” but think the swimming lessons are great. Heck all ages seem to be loving both pools for all sorts of reasons.

It is the concerns I had a month ago that were to be resolved by November 1 that concern me.   The wireless, cable, free weights, other equipment and cold showers? I have asked employees of the facility and gotten different vague answers.  I wrote the President of Garrett College and he stepped up to the plate.

Growing pains is how I can best describe it. Cable is starting to be installed on the cardio equipment. The showers are warming up. I was told the rest of the equipment should be due by December 1, 2011 or sooner. I still think the idea of a public swimming pool and fitness center are a great addition to Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County and look forward to the completion of the entire facility.

On a side note my gym routine has caused a change in diet. Gone is a lot of processed sugar leaving my cereal kind of blah. I started blending bananas and other fruit into my cereal milk and love it.
