Garrett Trails, Deep Creek Lake State Park Celebrate 20th Annual National Trails Day, Volunteers Needed

Something to do at Deep Creek Lake June 2, 2012. Deep Creek Lake State Park Rangers and Garrett Trails’ sustainable crew invite participants to join them as they clean and enhance area trails on June 2 in celebration of the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day.

“The 2012 National Trail Day theme is America’s Largest TRAILgating Party,” said Ranger David Best. “Garrett Trails and Deep Creek State Park are moving the party off the pavement to where the scenery is greener and the air is fresher.”

Participants will enjoy Deep Creek Lake State Park and share in the natural beauty of Garrett County as they join forces with Rangers of the Maryland Park Service, and Garrett Trails sustainable trail crew and interpretive staff members. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, tools, energy and enthusiasm for pruning branches, moving rocks, raking, grading and sprucing-up Meadow Mountain and Brant Mine Trails for the summer season.

“This is a day to come together outdoors to give back to the trails in our region,” said Theresa MacLennan, Garrett Trails Executive Director. “Discover, enjoy and care for the public lands trail system in Deep Creek Lake State Park.”

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at Deep Creek State Park’s upper overflow parking lot, off of State Park Road. Staff recommends that participants bring water, insect repellant, sunscreen, weather-appropriate clothing and a snack.         The event should last to about 12 p.m. More information is available by contacting Best at 301-387-5563 or MacLennan at 360-509-3492.

Something Different To Do At Deep Creek Lake? Adopt-A-Highway

Working as a REALTOR I spend a lot of time on the roads around Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County. They provide some of the greatest scenery anywhere. Mother Nature helps to provide much of the natural beauty. However there are some generous people who are also doing theirs.

Perhaps you have seen the signs when driving around announcing a stretch of highway is adopted by a person, business or group? Twice a year for the last 5 years I spend a brief part of a morning along Marsh Hill Rd. in Mchenry cleaning up. When all is said and done it is much nicer to cruise along that stretch of litter free road.

According to the Garrett County Roads Department the purpose of the program is as follows. “This program is intended to enhance the natural beauty of Garrett County by reducing litter along County roadways. By adopting a road, an individual or volunteer organization can help build a positive image for Garrett County.” You can read the ENTIRE PROGRAM DETAILS. If this is a great cause you would be interested in participating in

It is something different to do around Deep Creek Lake that can be rewarding while giving back to the community. Of course if people wouldnt litter in the first place.

SCUBA Diving Deep Creek Lake. Big Mussels

When planning a vacation or talking about Deep Creek Lake diving is not something that usually is mentioned or comes to mind. I think it would be great if we could sink some things and add diving to the huge list of great things to do in Garrett County.

I was running around for work and ran into a friend who mentioned they were getting ready to SCUBA Dive in Deep Creek Lake. Since getting my certification at Christmas to be a search and rescue diver, I have been anxious to “get my feet wet”. The  above water temperature was around 80 degrees today. It was 56 below the surface. The clarity of the lake was amazing, crystal clear. I would eventually like to spot and record one of the rumored GIANT CARP I hear about.

Today I spotted a bass, a crayfish, 2 stumps and a bunch of mussel shells. I was unaware they were even in the lake. Pretty large in fact. I hope to have an underwater camera soon so please check back often.

Deep Creek Lake To Hold Annual Ramp Cook Off April 28, 2012

If you pay close attention in your outdoor travels around Deep Creek Lake you may just catch a whiff of ‘Ramps’.  Allium Tricocum the Ramp is a wild onion/leek with a very strong odor and even bigger garlic/onion flavor. Eat enough and you will definitely smell like them. And they sure are delicious. I love to try and keep a jar of hot and sour pickled ramps around but they never seem to last.

Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center will be holding the annual Ramp Cook Off. April 28, 2012. It is a great event and chance to see some clever and tasty alternative uses for the Ramp.

Ice Fishing, Snowmobiling, Skating on Deep Creek Lake? Beware The Ice

It is no secret that Deep Creek Lake is a treasure providing great things to do in the summer months. Usually Deep Creek Lake is less used but equally enjoyed by winter sports enthusiasts. Ice fishing, snowmobiling, and skating on the frozen surface are all great things to do to enjoy our resource. Warmer temperatures this season have prevented the surface from freezing as of yet. Everyone knows it is coming and when it does please review the following public safety warning from the Maryland Park Service.

The Maryland Park Service advises individuals enjoying activities at Deep Creek Lake to be alert of safety hazards as temperatures begin to freeze the lake, particularly at night.

“Snowmobilers, ice fishermen, hikers and cross-country skiers traveling on the lake should exercise caution,” said Mark Spurrier, Deep Creek Lake Recreation Area Assistant Manager. “Wearing a personal floatation device could prevent a tragedy.”

Road salt and abrasives plowed from highway bridges may affect the quality of the ice underneath. Hidden snowdrifts can act as ramps and cause sleds and snowmobiles to become airborne leading to a loss of control and accidents.

Deep Creek Lake is part of the designated off-road vehicle trail system. Only registered snowmobiles are permitted to use the trail. Permits are available by mail or at any of the local State park offices. Snowmobiles may operate at night if equipped with working head and taillights. Access to the lake may be made at Deep Creek Lake State Park or with permission from a private landowner adjacent to the lake.

For information on ice conditions at Deep Creek Lake, call a park ranger at 301-387-5563 during the week-day or the Discovery Center on weekends at 301-387-7067.

To report people, pets or wildlife that have fallen through the ice, call either 911 or the Department of Natural Resources at 410-260-8888.
