Country Fest and Auction is held annually on the fourth Saturday of August at the Garrett County Fairgrounds in McHenry, MD from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM.
Admissions and Parking are FREE.
If you are looking for a semi-blast from the past event Country Fest & Auction is that something to do. There will be music, food, fun and plenty of activities for the kids. Plenty of demonstrations from soap making, and chair caning to horse shoe forging and making apple cider. A helicopter candy toss and HUGE auction. PLUS quilts galore. With the school year about to start and the temperatures cooling off a little, sometimes my thoughts are drifting to high school football. There are so many things to do at Deep Creek Lake and in Garrett County. High school football at either Northern Garrett or Southern Garrett High Schools are another great event.
With only two high schools in Garrett County the rivalry runs deep. Below is the schedule for the 2012 Northern Huskies varsity football season. The games are played behind the high school located north of Accident MD on 219.

As the seasons begin to change and the weather can be sometimes unpredictable. Often times this leaves one looking for alternate plans around Deep Creek Lake. Yard sales may not be for everyone so here is an alternative to the yard sale.

Rain or shine it is always nice to get in the car and take a cruise around Deep Creek Lake. Next weekend there will be even more to do and see. It is time again for the Artists Studio Tours in Garrett County. Not only something fun to do, but a great chance to meet the artists and see first hand how they do what they do.
If by chance it does not happen to be perfect weather one Monday, or it does. You may be looking for something different to do at Deep Creek Lake. Friends Store may be the thing.
Just down river from Deep Creek Lake is the Sang Run area. The Friends Store was once the meeting place for the local residents and fur trappers. Today the store is not open in a conventional way. However if you are looking for something else to do at Deep Creek Lake here is a chance to do a bit of a time warp.
Looking for something different to do this weekend at Deep Creek Lake. Check out Greg Latta at the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center for a free concert at 7:00 pm. The Discovery Center is located at Deep Creek Lake State Park. A great event for all ages.
A great event and something different to do on the shores of Deep Creek Lake. Forty-five plus artists including several new to the festival, display and sell their work at the 13th Annual Art in the Park in one of Western Maryland’s most magnificent settings – Deep Creek Lake State Park, July 14-15th. Arrive by boat, car or foot – enter thru gate @ Deep Creek Lake State Park (service charge applies). Entertainment, food, naturalist programs featured. Located on the east side of the lake – where recreational choices abound.
“Art in the Park is an event for the entire family to enjoy,” said Caroline Blizzard, volunteer coordinator of the Western Garrett County State Park Volunteers, Inc. (WGCSPVI) “Beautiful art work, hands-on activities, delicious food will delight children and parents alike. We are proud to offer such programs that can bring family, fun and education together.”
Co- sponsored by the Western Garrett County State Park Volunteers and the Garrett County Arts Council, Art in the Park provides a great fundraising opportunity for both organizations while presenting a quality festival. All artwork on display is available for purchase. The variety of artistic and handmade pieces at the event include: jewelry, photography, wood turned items, native wildflowers, pottery, fused glass, original artwork, wood painted furniture, handmade wooden furniture, tatting, homemade chocolates, hand-woven baskets, wool rugs, handmade soaps, children’s books w/ the author and much more. There will be a silent auction on Saturday that includes art work donated by our vendors. The Arts Council will be displaying and selling tickets for their annual quilt fundraiser as well.
Food and a variety of hands-on activities including Tie Dyeing, live animal displays and more can be enjoyed throughout the day. In addition, visitors can also explore the interpretive/educational Discovery Center, open 10 am to 5 pm daily, during the summer.
Art in the Park will occur on Saturday, July 14th from 10 – 5 and on Sunday, July 15th from 10 – 4, rain or shine. Admission is the usual charge into Deep Creek Lake State Park, $3.00 per person for MD residents and $5.00 per person for out-of-State vehicles. Docking is available for those wishing to come by water. Plan to come for the day and enjoy Art in the Park, along w/the beach area and all that the park has to offer.

The fair comes early this year, July 28 – August 4 2012. Held as always at the fairgrounds in McHenry with great views of Deep Creek Lake. This year the Garrett County Fair is celebrating its 56th year. One of summers biggest events at Deep Creek. There is something to do for everyone.
I try to visit several fairs over the summer and there really are few that can compare to the Garrett County Fair. Ours still has a focus on agriculture. It really showcases the efforts of the farmer. From the displays in the long barn to the fierce competition in the show ring it spotlights what most of Garrett County is about.
This years admission is $10.00 per person age 1 and up, includes gate admission, parking, entertainment, ALL events at the race track and rides in the carnival. There is another option sold as passes. Passes are good for 6 admissions ($5/day). They include: gate admission, parking, entertainment and ALL events at the race track. (Does NOT include rides in the carnival and CANNOT be transferred for rides in the carnival. Carnival tickets must be purchased at the gate on day of admission.) Once again the sky and land will be alive with sights and sound. The annual Fourth Of July Fireworks are scheduled for, yup July 4, 2012. A must attend event for locals and visitors alike. The fireworks will be launched from the tubing park at WISP resort. Plan to arrive early the fireworks begin around dusk. If you do not have a boat there are plenty of other great places to watch. Cars will line Rt 219 from the traffic light to the overlook. The Fairgrounds and Wisp parking lot have plenty of space.
There is also a concert on the lawn of Garrett College. from 7-10. Bring a lawn chair. Below are some highlights from last year.
Perfect timing as spring is slowly turning into summer at Deep Creek Lake. The 2012 Garrett County Home & Garden Show can answer the “What to do at Deep Creek Lake?” question. This family oriented event is FREE to the public and a great opportunity to meet the businesses and vendors in our area.
Exhibitors will be diverse combination of businesses and provide a great array of resources for anyone already or possibly having interest in home ownership, recreation, outdoors, Real Estate, decorating, electronics and numerous other traditional and non-traditional type home and garden products and services.
