Living in all this mountain beauty it is sometimes forgotten how rugged and challenging the terrain can be. The Savageman Triathlon reminds participants in a big way. This years event will be on September 15 – 16, 2012. If your plans do not currently include participating, but you want to watch? Volunteers are needed. This is a great way to help out a great cause and get up close to the action.
With the school year about to start and the temperatures cooling off a little, sometimes my thoughts are drifting to high school football. There are so many things to do at Deep Creek Lake and in Garrett County. High school football at either Northern Garrett or Southern Garrett High Schools are another great event.
With only two high schools in Garrett County the rivalry runs deep. Below is the schedule for the 2012 Northern Huskies varsity football season. The games are played behind the high school located north of Accident MD on 219.
If you have never been to the Garrett County Airport here is a great opportunity to check it out and have fun at this event. The view from the runway is amazing.
The 1st Annual Garrett County Appreciation Day in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Garrett County Airport Wings and Wheels Fly-In Celebration.
Come enjoy airplanes, cars, emergency vehicles, safety seminar for pilots, candy drop, and much more. Free hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks and cake cutting at 12 pm.
Numerous aircraft on display including military, Trooper 5 (State Police) and general aviation and free Balsa wood aircraft kit for kids*. The Mountaintop Classic Cars will be displaying 30-40 vehicles and Emergency Management trailers will be there with freebies. Fly-in for private aircraft.

The fair comes early this year, July 28 – August 4 2012. Held as always at the fairgrounds in McHenry with great views of Deep Creek Lake. This year the Garrett County Fair is celebrating its 56th year. One of summers biggest events at Deep Creek. There is something to do for everyone.
I try to visit several fairs over the summer and there really are few that can compare to the Garrett County Fair. Ours still has a focus on agriculture. It really showcases the efforts of the farmer. From the displays in the long barn to the fierce competition in the show ring it spotlights what most of Garrett County is about.
This years admission is $10.00 per person age 1 and up, includes gate admission, parking, entertainment, ALL events at the race track and rides in the carnival. There is another option sold as passes. Passes are good for 6 admissions ($5/day). They include: gate admission, parking, entertainment and ALL events at the race track. (Does NOT include rides in the carnival and CANNOT be transferred for rides in the carnival. Carnival tickets must be purchased at the gate on day of admission.)

THIS IS A TENTATIVE SCHEDULE, SUBJECT TO CHANGE
The Garrett County Gran Fondo has exploded as one of the most successful events in the Deep Creek Lake area. Now in the third year expectations are even higher. The event brings more than 1200 people to the area and The Fondo which is a race but the focus is more on participating and finishing if possible. Additionally is a “Win-The-Fight” Event that benefits the Joanna M Nicolay Melanoma Foundation.
There are actually five different rides that make up the Garrett County Gran Fondo. At the entry level is ‘Garrett’s Greatest 25′ a 25 mile rolling and scenic ride through Garrett County. The top of the charts is the ‘Diabolical Double‘. At 125 miles and in excess of 16,500′ of climbing it is billed as one of the top 25 epic rides in North America. “this ride is an extreme challenge on par with any single day ride in the world, including the European climbing classics such as Etape du Tour, la Marmotte, and the classic Italian Gran Fondos.”
Be sure to check out the Gran Fondo website for all kinds of great information. More importantly if you do not plan on riding in the event but plan on watching here is a tip. BE A VOLUNTEER This is a great way to see the action up close and feel great about helping out.

Look no further for something to do at Deep Creek Lake, Garrett County Thanksgiving weekend. November 25-26, 2011 10:00am-8:00pm. at the Garrett County Fairgrounds will be this years Festival of the Trees. There will be great things to do for all ages all day long at this Deep Creek event.
Decorated trees, wreaths, gingerbread houses will be on display. There will be auctions, make your own sundae with Lakeside Creamery ice cream. Arts & Crafts, Saint Nick. will be on hand. Karaoke, door prizes and displays and much more. Check out their website for more information and a complete calendar of events.
Now that Autumn Glory has passed there is no reason to think that Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County are void of things to do until the snow flies. For the next two weekends part of the Allegany Art Sale and Tour will weave through our neck of the woods.
An event sponsored by the Allegany Arts Council. This years tour will feature eight local Garrett County Artists. The entire tour will feature many varied forms photography, paintings, sculpture, glass, pottery and more. I know The Loft Shop in my hometown of Bittinger is on the route.
