Garrett County Commissioners Release Land Use Ordinance Draft

The Board of Garrett County Commissioners has released a draft Land Use Management Ordinance with a goal of encouraging County property owners and other stakeholders to examine and provide comment on the draft ordinance. After conducting four public work sessions, the Board decided at its meeting on May 1, 2012 to release the draft ordinance for a 45 day public comment period, which will end on June 15, 2012. All comments should be submitted directly to the Board of County Commissioners either in written paper form or by email. The Commissioners will gather all comments and post those comments, as they are received, on this website in order to allow citizens to see other comments. Something Different To Do At Deep Creek Lake? Adopt-A-Highway

Working as a REALTOR I spend a lot of time on the roads around Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County. They provide some of the greatest scenery anywhere. Mother Nature helps to provide much of the natural beauty. However there are some generous people who are also doing theirs.

Perhaps you have seen the signs when driving around announcing a stretch of highway is adopted by a person, business or group? Twice a year for the last 5 years I spend a brief part of a morning along Marsh Hill Rd. in Mchenry cleaning up. When all is said and done it is much nicer to cruise along that stretch of litter free road.

According to the Garrett County Roads Department the purpose of the program is as follows. “This program is intended to enhance the natural beauty of Garrett County by reducing litter along County roadways. By adopting a road, an individual or volunteer organization can help build a positive image for Garrett County.” You can read the ENTIRE PROGRAM DETAILS. If this is a great cause you would be interested in participating in

DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION.

It is something different to do around Deep Creek Lake that can be rewarding while giving back to the community. Of course if people wouldnt litter in the first place.

Snowpril Deep Creek Lake Style 2012

“SNOWPRIL” That is what Weather.com is calling it. The next end all storm that is paralyzing people with fear. I thin it is kind of cool to get a one day snow storm. I was greeted by this sight when I went out this morning. I can say I have never seen it lay like this in all my years at Deep Creek Lake.

Deep Creek Lake Maple Syrup? Well… Garrett County At Least.

I very happy that Fog Hollow Maple Syrup has agreed to be part sponsor on my race car this year. It helps my racing and gives me the chance to help promote a great product. Although this years weather made for a short and difficult season, I have had a chance to sample this years maple syrup and it is delicious. Joey Fullerton of Finzel makes the maple syrup for Fog Hollow. He taps trees in the Finzel area and has plans to tap trees on our farm in Bittinger next year. If you have not seen how the making of maple syrup has evolved check out  this video I made a few years ago.

To order your PURE GARRETT COUNTY MAPLE SYRUP give Joey a call at 240-727-2515. Mention the race car and this Blog and you may get a discount.

Swanton Brush Fire Proves High Fire Danger

About 4:15 April 20, 2012 The following units responded to a wild fire along the railroad tracks east of Swanton. Co 20, B99,B79, B109,B140, T96,T76, T106, MP140, S85,U88 R9-1, DNR. When all was said and done between 20-25 acres had burned and firefighters were on the scene for about 5 hours. As much as I love the mountains surrounding Deep Creek Lake I sometimes forget how steep and rugged they can be.

It is thought that a train was the culprit in the starting of this fire. Regardless, the DNR has warned that the danger of similar catastrophes remains high. “Currently, the combination of warm temperatures, low humidity, high winds and dry forests have caused many wildfires to quickly burn out of control,” said DNR Fire Supervisor Monte Mitchell.

As a REALTOR and Fireman I try my hardest to help people find the perfect property then protect their investment. The DNR has this to say about your personal property. “Homeowners also have a responsibility to ensure they are prepared for a wildfire. Creating an area of clear and open space at least 30 feet surrounding the home and outbuildings serves as a safety zone around the structures. Within this space, plants should be controlled and the area should be free of dead debris, leaves and flammable vegetation to prevent a wildfire from spreading from the forest to the structure. Maintaining a green space landscaped with fire resistant vegetation improves the safety zone. All households should also prepare a disaster plan.”  For wild land fire facts CLICK HERE

SCUBA Diving Deep Creek Lake. Big Mussels

When planning a vacation or talking about Deep Creek Lake diving is not something that usually is mentioned or comes to mind. I think it would be great if we could sink some things and add diving to the huge list of great things to do in Garrett County.

I was running around for work and ran into a friend who mentioned they were getting ready to SCUBA Dive in Deep Creek Lake. Since getting my certification at Christmas to be a search and rescue diver, I have been anxious to “get my feet wet”. The  above water temperature was around 80 degrees today. It was 56 below the surface. The clarity of the lake was amazing, crystal clear. I would eventually like to spot and record one of the rumored GIANT CARP I hear about.

Today I spotted a bass, a crayfish, 2 stumps and a bunch of mussel shells. I was unaware they were even in the lake. Pretty large in fact. I hope to have an underwater camera soon so please check back often.
